A few months back, we published a post called ‘Comfort Is King’ which featured the Proper Hotel (Santa Monica to be exact). The bold forms and eclectic design drew our attention and today we’re revisiting the Proper Hotels and showcasing them in all their imaginative glory.
Please allow your eyes to feast on this visual buffet.
The hotels began with the premise that every city needs a Proper place to stay. “Proper began as a feeling, not as an idea. The feeling was something akin to empathy; an acute awareness that despite the current proliferation of “boutique” and “lifestyle” hotels and residences, there were precious few properties designed for and around today’s global creative nomad. Our hotels and residences share a common belief in uncommon luxury, convenience of location and world-class amenities. Anything less just wouldn’t be proper.” – Brian De Lowe, President and Co-Founder.
Viceroy Hotel Group founders Brad Korzen, Brian De Lowe, and Alex Samek head the luxury boutique brand. Their ethos surrounding hospitality focuses on a ‘vibe’ and endeavours to provide an authentic lifestyle experience that brings together provocative design and intuitive service.
“If you have a bird’s eye view on the reception, the pattern of the wire brushed oak hardwood floors is reminiscent of opened umbrellas. So there’s a lot of very multi-directional activity on the floor, which was really interesting in this curvaceous shaped reception.” – Kelly Wearstler says of the living room style lobby of the Santa Monica Hotel.
Currently Proper exists as four hotels and two residences with a fifth hotel coming in 2021 to Portland (lucky them!). There’s no mass production or cookie-cutting here. The interiors throughout the Proper group are all carefully considered and expertly crafted by Kelly Wearstler. Each piece of furniture has been curated and commonly sourced from vintage shops, giving a very unique vibe.
Wearstler also designed the San Francisco Proper that features clashing patterns, colours and textures, and vintage furniture. No space has been forgotten. Walls are smothered in hand rendered concrete and wallpaper, floors have been crafted from intricate panels and inlays, furniture has been selected from contemporary sources and accessories have been thoughtfully displayed.

“We created Proper as a home base for today’s creative nomads and modern globetrotters. Our one-of-a-kind-hotels in creative hubs across the country offer a looser kind of luxury, with the top-notch service and world-class amenities you’ve come to expect, minus the pretension. Anything less wouldn’t be Proper.”
